The Ford Park courts were alive with the competitive basketball
spirit on the weekend, with 3 towns competing in the annual
Merimbula RSL Cup. The Merimbula Sharks, Bombala and Cooma
competed in this social tournament between the three clubs, with
some high level of skill displayed on the day. The Sharks turned
up the heat for the day in a display of some terrific basketball.
Not to be outdone, the weather also provided some heat for the day
with many players taking a dip in the surf in between their
matches to cool down. After 32 nail biting matches throughout the
tournament, the Merimbula Sharks were the victorious club, with a
total of 50 points. Cooma came a close second on 42 points with
Bombala not far behind on 36 points. All age groups participated
in the event, ranging from U/10's to U/18's as well as Ladies and
Men's. The Merimbula Sharks entered teams in every age group, as
did Cooma, with Bombala entering 8 out of the 12 age groups. The
Sharks U/10 girls played both of their matches against Cooma,
winning convincingly on each occasion by 16 points and 22 points.
The U/10 boys were not to be outdone, and also won both of their
matches against Cooma with impressive wins by margins of 19 and 18
points. The U/12 girls saw a big win against Cooma by 28 points
and a narrow loss to Bombala by just 4 points. The U/12 Boys
played in a tight match against Cooma, only to go down by a 3
point margin. Bombala proved too strong on the board for the
Merimbula boys, who lost this one by 16 points. The Sharks U/14
girls won a nail biter against Bombala by 7 points, and then had
the biggest winning margin of the day against Cooma - winning by a
massive 60 points. The U/14 boys also played exceptionally well
on the day with a win against Bombala by 21 points and a close
match against Cooma, going down by 9 points. The U/16 girls came
up against a very strong Cooma team and lost their first game by
20 points, however, came back fighting in their second game
against Cooma to loose the match by just 10 points. The u/16 boys
had a substantial 49 point win against Cooma, and a 14 point loss
to a strong Bombala side. The U/18 girls played both of their
matches against Cooma and had two nail biters from start to
finish. They lost their first match by just 1 goal and their
second one by only 4 goals. The U/18 boys had a massive 43 point
win against Cooma and yet another tight match for the day where
they went down to Bombala by just 3 points at the final Buzzer.
Like all the juniors on the day, the Ladies and Men's teams also
played extremely well. The ladies had a 37 point wi
n against
Bombala and 2 point victory against a strong Cooma side. The
Men's team played well throughout the day, with an 11 point win
over Cooma and a well fought match against Bombala, where they
ended up going down by 7 goals. Given the heatwave that effected
all players at the courts on Sunday, all teams played extremely
well and in good spirits. With all matches completed at 5.30pm,
the heat wave ended in a timely manner with a welcomed
thunderstorm at 5.45pm. There were many, many, many volunteers on
the day that all helped to make the tournament run smoothly, and
who also endured the heat. A big thank you to everyone from the
Merimbula Sharks club who assisted throughout the day to make it
enjoyable for everyone.
